چکیده

We derive improved versions of the relations between supermassive black hole mass (MBH) and host-galaxy bulge velocity dispersion (σ) and luminosity (L) (the M–σ and M–L relations), based on 49 MBH measurements and 19 upper limits. Particular attention is paid to recovery of the intrinsic scatter (ε0) in both relations. We find log(MBH/M ) = α + β log(σ/200 km s−1) with (α, β, ε0) = (8.12± 0.08, 4.24± 0.41, 0.44± 0.06) for all galaxies and (α, β, ε0) = (8.23±0.08, 3.96±0.42, 0.31±0.06) for ellipticals. The results for ellipticals are consistent with previous studies, but the intrinsic scatter recovered for spirals is significantly larger. The scatter inferred reinforces the need for its consideration when calculating local black hole mass function based on the M–σ relation, and further implies that there may be substantial selection bias in studies of the evolution of the M–σ relation. We estimate the M–L relationship as log(MBH/M ) = α + β log(LV /1011L ,V ) of (α, β, ε0) = (8.95± 0.11, 1.11± 0.18, 0.38± 0.09); using only early-type galaxies. These results appear to be insensitive to a wide range of assumptions about the measurement errors and the distribution of intrinsic scatter. We show that culling the sample according to the resolution of the black hole’s sphere of influence biases the relations to larger mean masses, larger slopes, and incorrect intrinsic residuals. The black hole mass – stellar velocity dispersion correlation: bulges versus pseudobulges

We investigate the correlation between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) mass (Mbh) and the stellar velocity dispersion (σ∗) in two types of host galaxies: the early-type bulges (disk galaxies with classical bulges or elliptical galaxies) and pseudobulges. In the form log(Mbh/M ) = α + β log(σ∗/200 km s−1), the best-fit results for the 39 early-type bulges are the slope β = 4.06 ± 0.28 and t...

Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bulges

Growing evidence indicate supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in a mass range of MBH∼ 10 6 − 10M⊙ lurking in central stellar bulges of galaxies. Extensive observations reveal fairly tight power laws of MBH versus the mean stellar velocity dispersion σ of the host stellar bulge. Together with evidence for correlations between MBH and other properties of host bulges, the dynamic evolution of a bulge...

The black hole mass–bulge mass correlation: bulges versus pseudo-bulges

We investigate the scaling relations between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) mass (Mbh) and the host bulge mass in elliptical galaxies, classical bulges, and pseudo-bulges. We use two-dimensional image analysis software BUDDA to obtain the structural parameters of 57 galaxies with dynamical Mbh measurement, and determine the bulge K-band luminosities (Lbul,K), stellar masses (Ms), and dyna...

Mass and Mean Velocity Dispersion Relations for Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bulges

Growing evidence indicate supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the mass range of MBH∼ 106− 10M⊙ lurking in central bulges of many galaxies [1, 2]. Extensive observations reveal fairly tight power laws of MBH versus the mean stellar velocity dispersion σ of the host bulge [3, 4, 5]. The dynamic evolution of a bulge and the formation of a central SMBH should be physically linked by various observa...

The Spitzer/IRAC view of black hole–bulge scaling relations

We present a mid-infrared investigation of the scaling relations between supermassive black hole masses (MBH) and the structural parameters of the host spheroids in local galaxies. This work is based on 2D bulge-disc decompositions of Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 μm images of 57 galaxies with MBH estimates. We first verify the accuracy of our decomposition by examining the Fundamental Plane (FP) of spheroi...
